First make sure you have a deicer in the pond in front of the skimmer. The deicer will keep a whole in the ice and allow the water to flow freely into the skimmer.
Second, leave your pond pumps running. Running water doesn’t freeze like standing water. This is also why plumbers recommend you leave your faucets dripping in these cold Lexington area winters.
Third, check your pond water level daily. As ice forms it removes water from the pond so check the water level to make sure your pump isn’t running dry. You may need to add a little water and detox as needed to keep your pond running.
Finally, check for ice dams in the stream and falls. As ice forms in the stream and falls on your pond it can allow water to flow over the liner. So check and make sure that your pond is free of ice dams and water is flowing where it should.
