Do I need to net my Pond for Fall here in Lexington and Central Kentucky?
Many pond owners here in the Lexington/Central Kentucky area don't know about pond netting, many seasoned pond owners use it but aren't real sure why, and even many of those who know why don't necessarily know how. It's time to add some clarity to the issue of pond netting in Central Kentucky.
It's actually pretty simple. The primary reason for installing a net over your pond is to keep leaves out of the water. (Netting can also be used to protect fish from predators when you trim your lilies and plants back for the Fall. ) But, the question may still linger, "Why do we need to keep the leaves out of our ponds?"
When installed correctly pond nets help protect your pond from falling leaves and debris which all of us in the Lexington Central Kentucky know can end up in our ponds. Additionally, Pond nets can drastically reduce your maintenance and keep leaves from clogging up your skimmer basket, filter and pumps, when leaves decay on the bottom of your pond during the winter they consume oxygen, if enough oxygen is consumed it could potentially kill your fish, and the beneficial bacteria your ecosystem needs to thrive. This is why netting is so important in the fall, it helps keep those oxygen stealing leaves and debris out of your Central Kentucky pond.
Once you have decided that you need a net for your pond it is important to note the proper installation of the net. The most common method we see Lexington Homeowners do is simply stretching the net tightly across the pond and securing the edges with stakes and/or rocks. While this method may work initially it is common for the netting to become weighted down with leaves (Especially after a Central Kentucky Rainy Day) and sag into the pond. This is a very bad thing since the leaves and net create a "blanket" for the pond and can potentially suffocate your pond and fish from much needed oxygen or cause a leak.
Our preferred method of Pond netting installation is to use 1/2" PVC Poles to create a Dome (See Picture) and secure the netting to the PVC with zip ties to create a "Dome Pond Tent" for your pond. This method allows leaves to easily fall off of the net and so that the previously referred to "sagging" does not occur.
